TMJ & Bite Splints

Treatment for Jaw Muscle and Joint Disorders (TMJ)

Jaw joint disorders, commonly referred to as temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), can lead to a wide range of symptoms – from jaw pain and headaches to neck and back tension, and even tinnitus.

What is TMJ?

TMJ refers to a functional disorder of the temporomandibular joint and the surrounding muscles. It can result from various factors, such as:

  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Misalignments of teeth or jaws
  • Stress-related muscle tension
  • Accidents or injuries

Our Treatment Approach to TMJ

At our practice, we emphasize precise diagnosis and tailored treatment plans. Using manual structural analysis and functional diagnostics, we thoroughly assess your jaw joints, as well as the surrounding muscles and ligaments.

For comprehensive care, we collaborate with physiotherapists, osteopaths, and other specialists as needed. In some cases, we may also consider botulinumtoxin treatment to relax overactive muscles and provide lasting relief for jaw joint and muscle tension.

Your Benefits at a Glance

  • Pain Relief: Targeted therapies to relax jaw muscles and alleviate joint strain.
  • Holistic Approach: Consideration of posture, muscle balance, and stress factors.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Access to a network of physiotherapists, osteopaths, and Botox treatments when appropriate.

Treatment Options

  • Customized Bite Splints: We provide fully adjustable CAD/CAM-fabricated splints based on precise instrumental analysis. These splints relieve joint stress and reduce teeth grinding.
  • Functional Analysis and Therapy: To optimize jaw movement and restore a healthy bite.
  • Integration of Physiotherapy, Osteopathy, and Muscle Relaxants: Effective measures for muscle relaxation, improved posture, and targeted treatment of overactive muscles.
  • Stress Management and Relaxation Techniques: Helping to reduce stress-induced strain on the jaw.

Cost Coverage

For treatments involving customized bite splints, not all necessary diagnostics and procedures are covered by statutory health insurance. However, private dental insurance and private health insurance plans typically provide coverage.
